Striker Alan Smith was missing from the Magpies line-up, and seemed to confirm the rumours he was on his way to Everton, as had been rumoured earlier in the day.

Smith scored on his Toon debut against Sampdoria exactly a year ago, but he didn't score once during the 2007/8 campaign.

The striker wasn't injured and has been linked strongly in the last two days with a move to Everton following Andy Johnson's departure to Fulham.

Steven Taylor put the Magpies ahead after only three minutes, heading in Geremi's outswinging corner, and home debutant Danny Guthrie made it two five minutes later from James Milner's through ball.

Newcastle were pegged back on the half-hour mark as Ibrahim Afellay fired in after Shay Given parried a shot from Nordin Amrabat.

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson prevented the Magpies from extending their lead and it was Amrabat who drew PSV level 20 minutes from time with a snapshot from 12 yards.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Given, Beye (Edgar 58), Taylor, Cacapa. Enrique, Duff, Guthrie, Butt (Bassong 90), Geremi (Donaldson 58), Gutierrez, Milner (Danquah 90).
