As you can see from the record its honours completely even.

Past meetings

18/09/2002 Champions League

Dynamo Kyiv 2 Newcastle United 0

Goals from Shatskikh after 16 minutes and Khatskevitch in the 62nd minute were enough for Kyiv to defeat us, in what was by some distance our poorest European performance of the season. Despite Sir Bobby’s protestations, 2-0 flattered us and the first goal was amongst the best long-range strikes I have witnessed.

10/12/1997 Champions League

Newcastle United 2 Dynamo Kyiv 0

It was nice to finish off our first Champions League campaign with a win, but by this stage we were already out and they were already through to the quarter-finals. Goals by veteran duo Stuart Pearce and John Barnes sealed the victory for us.

01/10/1997 Champions League

Dynamo Kyiv 2 Newcastle United 2

After beating Barcelona in the first group match we thought this Champions League lark was easy, but how wrong could you be. Wave after wave of Ukranian onslaught and only a wonderful display by Shay Given kept the score down to 2-0. Then up stepped John Beresford with two late deflected goals to give us a share of the points.

Tomorrow’s game

Tuesday’s game, like the Juventus match, falls into the must win category. But we should be confident after two wins on the run.

Kyiv will be confident as well after defeating Feyenoord last week and winning in the Ukranian Premier League on Saturday.

The good news is that Kieron Dyer is back and a Dyer-Shearer partnership will give the visitors’ defence untold problems, but we must be careful.

Kyiv will come to defend and play on the break and we saw in the first game how dangerous these tactics can be.

We must win to keep alive our chances of qualification, but a win for Kyiv will see them into the second phase.

The other game is just as important and a draw between Feyenoord and Juventus would set things up nicely for the final set of games.
