The Newcastle defender’s current deal is set to expire at the end of this season, with no formal approach regarding his future having been made by the Newcastle hierarchy.
Fernandez is amongst a host of players nearing the end of their contracts, with teammates Matty Longstaff and Javier Manquillo also already free to talk to overseas clubs.
The former Argentina international arrived at St James’ Park from Swansea in 2018 and has gone on to make 38 Premier League appearances for the northeast side. The centre-back has been an ever-present for Steve Bruce’s side this season, contributing two goals in 19 games.
The Chronicle report that Newcastle intend to open negotiations with their soon-to-be out of contract players in the coming weeks, with the club seemingly keen not to lose the players on a free transfer in the summer.
Fernandez is set to play a key part as Steve Bruce and his team look to ensure they aren’t dragged into a relegation dog fight towards the latter end of the campaign. Bruce has surpassed expectations following the departure of Rafael Benitez, in a season which a lot of people had tipped Newcastle to be relegated.
The northeast side are currently sitting 12th in the table, seven points ahead of West Ham who occupy the final relegation spot. With games against Burnley, Southampton
Bruce’s immediate attention will be Sunday’s trip to Arsenal. The visitor’s recent record against the Gunners does not make for pleasant viewing, having mustered just one win in their previous 16 matches. However, Mikel Arteta’s men are enduring a tumultuous season and currently sit level on points with Newcastle, just a place above them in 11th on goal difference.
