Newcastle Prepare Fresh Summer Bid for Andreas Samaris After Failed January Move

Andreas Samaris could finally complete his move to Premier League side Newcastle United in the summer, following a failed attempt in the January transfer window.

Samaris was offered a move away from Benfica by the Magpies in January, but contract negotiations stalled after personal terms could not be agreed upon. Samaris was signed by the Portuguese club for £10m in 2014 after two successful seasons at Olympiakos.

ChronicleLive is reporting that Samaris' deal with Benfica will not be renewed at the end of this campaign, making it inevitable that Newcastle swoop in once again. The deal should be easier to work out now that his contract won't be renewed and should give Samaris more stability in the long run.

Initial negotiations between the Magpies and the 29-year-old fell apart when Samaris didn't want to commit to a heavily-incentivised contract. The offer was seen as complicated by Samaris and included a clause which would extend the original six-month deal based on how many games he played. Samaris did not want to risk being without a club in the summer and decided to fight for his place at Benfica.

Benfica see Newcastle's next approach as imminent and seem keen to cooperate in the process to get the Greek international to the Premier LeagueNewcastle will look at Samaris to provide competition to youngsters Shane Longstaff and Isaac Hayden in defensive midfield and help them develop their own games.

Newcastle continue their fight away from the relegation zone on 23 February as they host bottom-feeders Huddersfield at St James' Park. Meanwhile, Benfica will be hoping to close the gap between themselves and first-place Porto to one point as they travel to Aves on Monday night.
