Newcastle 2022/23 season preview: How to watch, summer transfers & league prediction

Newcastle turned things around big time last season to avoid relegation and achieve a more than respectable Premier League finish in the circumstances.

Now, the plan is to surge up the table and start moving towards the targets set out by the ambitious owners. In Eddie Howe, they have a manager proven at this level given his overachievement at Bournemouth and a squad with a number of quality players arguably capable of beating any side.

The middle of the Premier League table seems very fluid, so will be an opportunity for the Magpies to improve on last season if they can find the kind of consistency they finished 2021/22 with.

Here's 90min's preview of Newcastle's season.

Newcastle summer transfers

For all the hype around Newcastle in the transfer market given the obvious wealth of the Saudi owners, they haven't gone mad with new signings.

Matt Targett had already joined on loan, now a permanent buy, which means the only two actual new faces at the time of writing are England international Nick Pope and long-term target Sven Botman, going for quality over quantity.

There hasn't been a lot of outgoing turnover either, with Freddie Woodman and Dwight Gayle the only first-team departures of note. Neither had major roles last season.

Newcastle key players 2022/23

Star player

Bruno Guimaraes made such an impact following his January arrival from Lyon and is already a cult hero among Newcastle fans. With a full pre-season under his belt and even more time to settle, the Brazilian could be even better and could feasibly contribute double figures in goals from midfield.

But Joelinton will continue to have a big role, while Callum Wilson has had an injury-free pre-season and is a proven Premier League striker when fully fit.

One to watch

Newcastle invested a lot of money in Sven Botman, who is still only 22. The Magpies wanted the Dutch defender for a long time and he gave up immediate Champions League football to go to St James' Park because Italian champions AC Milan were also keen.
