Now the Sunday Sun suggests the time could come for Big Sam to step into his "dream job" and lead the country in Euro 2008.
And it may not be the end of the world for the Toon Army, who were split over Sam's appointment as Newcastle manager, and some have yet to take to him.
McClaren Not Out Of The Woods As Big Sam Is Tipped For Job!
The Sunday Sun claim: "Newcastle will step up their push to persuade Alan Shearer to succeed Sam Allardyce - if the current United manager replaces Steve McClaren as England coach.
"With McClaren still in danger of the sack, the Magpies are aware that Allardyce will feature on the FA's shortlist of potential replacements.
"And, having already met with Shearer in the summer and discussed the prospects of him entering the United dug-out in future years, Newcastle's new regime will offer him the manager's job if Big Sam gets the call of his country.
"Despite being the outstanding English candidate, Allardyce is seen as an outsider for the England post, not least because of his former Bolton chairman Phil Gartside's presence on the FA board charged with choosing the national coach.
"But with top foreign bosses potentially beyond the FA's reach, Allardyce - who impressed when interviewed for the job last summer - could yet come to the fore."
