Newcastle's bid for Champions League football gathered pace as they beat Bolton 2-0 to pull level on points with Tottenham, who slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Norwich.

Chelsea failed to take full advantage of Spurs' loss as they drew 1-1 at Fulham in day's final match in the top-flight.

Newcastle winger Hatem Ben Arfa produced a moment of magic with a run from inside his own half to open the scoring in the 73rd minute.

Papiss Cisse then scored his eighth goal in five games - and 10th in nine appearances since arriving in January - seven minutes from time to secure the win.

It lifted the Magpies up to 59 points, behind Spurs only on goal difference, after Harry Redknapp's side were beaten.

Norwich took the lead at White Hart Lane through Anthony Pilkington's 13th-minute goal but the hosts equalised in controversial circumstances.

Canaries manager Paul Lambert was furious when Ledley King appeared to foul Grant Holt in the penalty area but play continued and Spurs counter-attacked with Jermain Defoe lifting a shot over goalkeeper John Ruddy for his 16th goal of the season.

The visitors had another shout for a penalty turned down after the break when Emmanuel Adebayor tangled with Aaron Wilbraham before Spurs winger Gareth Bale hit the crossbar.

It was Elliott Bennett's first goal for Norwich in the 66th minute that secured the victory for the away side.

Clint Dempsey's late goal earned Fulham a deserved 1-1 draw from the west London derby against Chelsea.

Dempsey's header glanced in off Gary Cahill eight minutes from time to deny the Cottagers' arch-rivals a win that would have taken them level on points with Spurs and Newcastle.

Frank Lampard's 150th Premier League goal - making him the first midfielder to reach the milestone - had given Chelsea the lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.

Referee Mark Clattenburg initially looked to have penalised a two-footed tackle from Danny Murphy on Salomon Kalou but it was actually awarded for a much less clear challenge by Stephen Kelly.

It was the third match in six days Chelsea had been at the centre of controversial officiating but there was no victory this time as they failed to win a London derby for the fifth time this season and ended the day in sixth place.

Everton warmed up for their FA Cup semi-final derby against Liverpool with a resounding 4-0 win at home to Sunderland.

Manager David Moyes appeared to have one eye on the Wembley encounter as he left Leighton Baines, Tim Cahill and in-form striker Nikica Jelavic out of his squad entirely but it had no bearing on the outcome.

Six minutes into the second half Magaye Gueye scored his first for the club when he converted after Leon Osman's effort was parried by goalkeeper.

Substitute Royston Drenthe and Gueye combined to set up Steven Pienaar to curl home the second in the 75th minute.

The South Africa international then set up Osman to add the third with a shot in off the post 90 seconds later before Victor Anichebe to make it 4-0 and increase seventh-placed Everton's lead over Liverpool to four points.

Stoke defender Robert Huth scored for the second time in 48 hours to earn his side a 1-1 draw in the clash at Aston Villa.

Huth had netted his side's first goal when they came from behind to defeat Wolves and made another telling contribution against Alex McLeish's side.

The former Chelsea player's 71st minute header cancelled out a stunning strike from Villa striker Andreas Weimann which had broken the deadlock.

Villa now sit seven points clear of the relegation zone after picking up a point.
