Now Sunderland have expressed an interest in signing the former Newcastle striker.
The Mackems have made initial contact with the 32-year-old free agent.
However, it is understood that conversation is yet to be followed up and that long-time admirers Stoke remain more likely to make the decisive move.
Owen has been linked with a series of clubs, including Everton, Liverpool and West Ham as well as the Potters and Sunderland.
He spent four years in the north-east after the Toon made him their record signing when they pulled off what looked like a sensational coup by bringing him back to England from Real Madrid in August 2005.
However his contribution over those four years was limited, missing more than two-thirds of Newcastle's matches.
He was unable to prevent the club slipping out of the top flight at the end of the 2008-09 season, and his pathetic performance in the last game of the season at Villa Park will long live in the memory.
We only needed a point to stay up, but (as always) Owen showed little interest ... and was the first to run out of the back door when we were relegated.

Newcastle United fans have seen their team come a long way since earning promotion back to the Premier League in 2010 and nobody could have predicted the exciting season that lay ahead at the start of the 2011/12 campaign.
