Four Sunderland players have been sent off in ill-tempered clashes between the two clubs over the past two seasons.

Referee Mike Dean sent off Stephane Sessegnon in the last derby for clashing with Tiote.

Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole – who will miss the match through suspension – was then dismissed after the final whistle for dissent, and Pardew and Martin O’Neill clashed on the touchline.

United’s goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman was also sent to the stands after an exchange in the tunnel at half-time.

Alan Pardew: “Of course, we’ll be reminding the players of players of their responsibilities.

“We can’t afford to lose a player.

“If you go down to 10 men, the stats are, across the Premier League, that you’re probably going to lose the game.

“We also can’t lose sight of the fact that we’ve got to be competitive – Sunderland, and Martin O’Neill’s teams – are very competitive.”
