Thursday night’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Maritimo was still enough to book the club a place in the Europa League’s Round of 32.

Newcastle can now focus fully on the Premier League until the knockout stages start in February.

They take on Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium tomorrow and then visit Stoke City on Wednesday night.

Tim Krul: “We have to stick together.

“Last year, everything went for us.

“We were luckier with injuries to a certain extent. But this is part of football – we have to get on with it.

“It’s a rough patch. We’ll have to take it as it comes. We’ve got Southampton, and then Stoke on Wednesday night.

“It’s going to be two hard games. We’ll have to get back the spirit, and stick together.

“We’ll have to look after ourselves and recover quickly.

“We need a win. We need to get back to winning ways. We’re going through a little rough patch, but we’ve got a good chance.

“I don’t think we’ve had a lot of luck at all in the last couple of home games.

“I remember last year we had a rough patch over the winter. Hopefully, we can turn it round.

“It’s one win we need – if we get that, everything can turn around.

“It’s mad. The league is tight as well. If you win one, you’re back up to ninth, and everything is fine again.”
