And STILL Kinnear tells everyone (or those who show the slightest interest) how he was a great success at St James' Park ... and it was others who got the team relegated back in 2009.

The Toon Army never took to the man - and why should they?

How he got the Newcastle job in the first place- stunned everyone, and showed the inexperience of Mike Ashley in football matters at that time.

Today Kinnear says he warned Ashley not to gamble on Alan Shearer saving the club from relegation three years ago.

Ashley was forced into taking drastic action as the team slid towards the bottom of the Premier League.

Toon legend Shearer was the supporters’ choice and, with only eight games remaining, the billionaire businessman bowed to public pressure and asked the local hero to step in.

But this was one miracle that even Shearer could not pull off and a 1-0 defeat at Villa Park on the final day of the 2008/09 season condemned Newcastle to the drop.

Joe Kinnear: “Mike visited me in hospital and said that Chris was being replaced by Shearer and Iain Dowie.

“He owned the club and that’s how he felt, so that’s what he did.

“Mike asked me what I thought and I told him that Shearer didn’t have any managerial experience, even if he certainly had the backing of the fans.

“I said to Mike that it wasn’t the right time to do it because that made it three managers in one season (Kevin Keegan was the other) and that could be confusing for the players regarding training and tactics.

"We had a regular routine. The players knew what to expect from me. We trained as we played.

“I didn’t do five-a-sides. The players found my training tough, however, it was for the benefit of a Saturday.

“I worked on tactics and set-pieces every day. I liked to question players on a daily basis, ask them about the guy he was up against that weekend.

“I did say to Mike to put selling the club on hold. I was looking ahead to next season and was sure we’d stay up. I was all ready to draw up a hit- list of players and use my contacts to add four or five new players to the squad.

“But it all went pear-shaped on the last day.

“I’m not sure it was the best idea to play Damien Duff at left-back that day. I still don’t know the reasons for that.

"He was one of the best left wingers in the league. Whether he was there because of injury I can’t say.

“The young fans, and I believe it was only a small section, wondered why Joe Kinnear was at Newcastle because they wanted Alan Shearer, who was their hero.

“I did ask the Press once whether they knew how many times I had been manager of the year. None of them knew. It was three times ... Sir Alex Ferguson has only won it one more, so I must have been doing something right.”
