Jamal Lewis Undergoes Newcastle Medical Ahead of £15m Move From Norwich

Norwich City defender Jamal Lewis underwent his medical tests on Tuesday morning ahead of a £15m move to Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old impressed in parts during the 2019/20 campaign for Norwich, despite his side's poor defensive record. The left-back was a valuable squad player for the Canaries, making 33 appearances in all competitions.

Following his side's relegation from the Premier League, Lewis has attracted attention from a number of clubs. Most recently, however, Newcastle saw an offer of £15m (including add-ons) accepted for his services.

The deal is now expected to officially be completed imminently as Sky Sports' Keith Downie reports that Lewis took his medical examinations on Tuesday ahead of the move. Should all go smoothly, this would likely be the final step before an official announcement is made.

Downie further adds that the deal has progressed quickly as Magpies boss Steve Bruce is keen to have all three of his new additions in the squad for their opening game of the Premier League season. Indeed, Lewis will soon join former Bournemouth duo Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson in making the switch.

Newcastle beat Aston Villa to the signing of striker Wilson, while Fraser joined on a free transfer after his contract with Bournemouth expired. With Lewis now set to sign imminently, all three players could be involved in some capacity when the Magpies travel to take on West Ham in their opening match on Saturday.

Lewis had attracted interest from a number of clubs, including Leicester. Furthermore, champions Liverpool were also very keen on the idea of bringing him to Anfield this summer to provide competition for Andy Robertson, while the defender himself was also said to be 'desperate' to join Jurgen Klopp's men.

However, Norwich's valuation of the player put the Reds off. As a result, they looked elsewhere and brought in Kostas Tsimikas for around £11.75m.
