Carroll will miss the next three matches after Preston decided not to appeal the young striker's red card at Scunthorpe on Tuesday night.

Preston North End boss Paul Simpson admitted the teenager, who is on-loan for this season, deserved to be dismissed for retaliating against Scunthorpe United central defender Andy Butler.

The PNE manager said: "He had to go off - there are no arguments about that.

"We need to have a look at the video.

"But from what I saw on the touchline the two players collided, their player kicked Andy on the ground, Andy reacted to it and the linesman saw it.

"There is no point me talking to the referee about it. I'm not going to waste my time because it's not going to change now."

Targetman Carroll, who has played in North End's last six matches since arriving on loan from Newcastle, faces an automatic three-match ban for violent conduct.

He has joined a side that is facing a relegation battle this campaign.
