He Could Have Been A Legend But Owen Will Never Be A Geordie!

He came to Newcastle as a record signing - even more than the then-world record £15m we paid for Alan Shearer - but he ended up costing us more than £40m (if you include his wages) and gave us very little in return.

Four years of almost nothingness from a player who could have been a Geordie legend but never set the place alight.

Owen was never "one of us" ... and I don't think for one minute he ever wanted to be.

He hasn't the heart to be a Geordie.

He's no more than the "give me the money" foreign tossers who have arrived on Tyneside in recent years and fleeced the club for millions.

Took his pay cheque and waffled his way through four years looking less than interested at best ... bored stiff at worst.

At the time he was in a football wasteland. He had the choice - Wigan on £60,000 a week or Newcastle on £110,000.

I'm sure he spent hours of soul-searching making up his mind.

But Owen put all thought of money behind him, and signed for Newcastle.

It emerged this week Everton are preparing to offer him a contract this summer, and we all know he cannot wait to get hold of the pen.

With the 29-year-old striker refusing to put pen to paper on a new contract until the end of the campaign, it seemed a foregone conclusion the out-of-favour England forward would be playing his club football elsewhere next season.

With Brazilian Jo set to return to Manchester City at the end of his loan and Victor Anichebe's Goodison Park future in doubt, David Moyes needs to bolster his striking resources for next season.

Few Newcastle fans will mourn Owen's departure after only 57 league starts and 13 goals in all competitions for a £40m investment.

The truth is ... Michael Owen will go down in history as the most expensive flop in Toon history.
