Gutierrez captained Alan Pardew’s side in Monday night’s 2-2 draw against Everton and is likely to be again handed the skipper’s armband again.

Gutierrez was left out of the squad for Thursday night’s Europa League game against Maritimo in Madeira.

Jonas Gutierrez: “We have to be fit and ready and ready when the manager wants you – that’s important.

“We can’t play every game. It’s going to be a long season.

“Last season Papiss finished really good.

“He hasn’t found the net so far this season, but he’s working hard for the team.

“Demba wasn’t scoring goals in the second half of last season, but he came off the bench and scored two.

“We don’t care about whether someone is scoring or not, or in their best form, just that they’re trying to do their best. They’re working hard. When things aren’t easy for you as a player, maybe you don’t have the same confidence, you have to work hard.

“When you do that, the results come. That was good for Demba, and goals will come for Papiss.

“Shola (Ameobi) is back and working hard. He helped us for the second goal. That’s what we want – all the players focused and working for the team.

“When you do that, you’re going to get good results.”
