The youngster hopes to force his way back into the Scottish national side, but is conscious of the need to play first team football if he is to achieve that goal.

Caldwell’s contract is up at the end of the season and with no new deal currently on the table he may have to make an unwanted move in the summer.

"I had the offer of a new contract taken away by the club a couple of weeks ago," he said.

"My current contract comes to an end in the summer and I know anything can happen in football - and at the moment there is no contract offer for me.

"I have always wanted to play for Newcastle, but if I am forced to move on, I know I could do a job for someone else."
