'Goal Shy' Smith Not The Man For Old Trafford?

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan could see his striking options bolstered for Sunday's Barclays Premier League opener against Manchester United by the return from injury of Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi.
And KK is desperate to pose a goal threat to Man Utd on Sunday as his strikers have failed to find the net in any of Newcastle's pre-season friendlies.

HARTLEPOOL 1 NEWCASTLE UTD 4 (Duff 3, Guthrie)

DONCASTER 1 NEWCASTLE UTD 0

HERTHA BERLIN 1 NEWCASTLE UTD 0

REAL MALLORCA 1 NEWCASTLE UTD 0

NEWCASTLE UTD 2 PSV EINDHOVEN 2 (Taylor,Guthrie)

NEWCASTLE UTD 2 VALENCIA 1 (Duff, Milner)

Former Man Utd striker Alan Smith was sent off in the 6-0 drubbing at Old Trafford last season, more through a show of childish petulance than anything damaging.

And he is under immense pressure from Toon fans, never mind Man Utd fans, and Sunday could have him throwing another dummy out the pram. Something Keegan can do without.

Shola Ameobi, who earlier this summer looked to be on his way out of St James' Park, could also come into consideration after shaking off a hamstring strain suffered in the pre-season Mallorca Cup clash with Hertha Berlin on August 1.

Keegan: "Shola will be back in full training this week after his hamstring injury.

"It is not as bad as we thought when he came off in the first game in Majorca.

"He has started light training and will be back this week."

With Mark Viduka and Andy Carroll definitely out of the match at Old Trafford, the potential availability of Owen, in particular, and Ameobi would be welcome news to Keegan who would otherwise be left with just Obafemi Martins and goal-shy Smith to select from up front.
