Frank Clark: "I'm a great believer in the system that Mike Ashley put in place, but it's a question of putting the right people in the right holes.

"I don't think you should knock the structure, it's the people within it who were at fault. Dennis (Wise) was a poor choice, because of his age as much as anything else.

"Dennis should still want to be a manager at his age, he should want to be out there firing the bullets and taking the stick. As long as you're doing that you can't be a director of football. So I don't think there's anything wrong with the system.

"If Alan (Shearer) wants total control, good luck to him, but it's very difficult to be totally in control of a club as big as Newcastle United and still be focused on what matters, which is the first team.

"The only thing that matters is the first team winning games on a Saturday - or whenever they play these days!

"Winning has to be the priority. Alan seems to be the type of bloke who wants to look at every aspect of the football club, and there's nothing wrong with that.

"But he will need experienced people around him to help him deal with that. He can't do everything. It's impossible at a big club for one man to really control everything. He needs people around him to make sure things are done correctly."
