Ex-Toon Skipper Loves The "Underdogs" Tag

I remember it well. Snow fell and most of the Setubal players had never seen snow before! And the Magpies went on to win 5-1 in an amazing match.

VITORIA SETUBAL - Portugal (H) 5-1 (Davies, Foggon, Gibb, B Robson 2)

McFaul, Craggs, Clark, Gibb, Burton, Moncur, B Robson, Horsfield (Sinclair), Davies, Scott, Foggon. Att: 57,662

Legendary Toon skipper Bob Moncur played that day, and he says he wishes someone would take away his record of being the last Toon skipper to lift a cup.

Moncur: "No doubt about it, I would love Scott Parker to take the title from me. I never thought when we won the Fairs Cup in '69 that we would still be waiting for the next one in 2007.

"And I say that with the greatest of respect too, because we have had some great years under Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan since then.

"This year Newcastle have a real chance, a genuine chance, to do well in the UEFA Cup.

"United are in the last 16 now and although it is an achievement to get this far, for me the tournament starts now.

"They played some tough group games against Palermo and Fenerbahce but this is where it starts for me.

"When we went all of the way in 1969, we were never favourites in any game. We were always underdogs and it proved to be a good weapon for us.

"There are still some good teams left in the competition but Newcastle will be quietly confident."
