The veteran hopes the new boss will give him a lifeline, after none of the three German clubs who were "supposed" to be interested made an offer.

It would have been no surprise if Hamann found himself surplus to requirements after being restricted to just 14 starts during an injury-hit debut campaign with the Blues following his controversial switch from Liverpool via Bolton.

However, the 33-year-old hopes he has a place in Eriksson's plans.

Hamann: "We have a few midfielders now but it does not worry me. Whoever comes in, I will fight for my place and I will be ready.

"I have never feared competition and I won't this season either.

"I didn't play well enough last year but I have had a good pre-season, with no injuries, and I am looking forward to Saturday."

Controversial signing for Newcastle to say the least.

Didn't like Newcastle city at all. Established German international and how can we forget his goal against England in 2000 that ended Keegan's managerial career?

Great player, but wanted to move on and ended up at Liverpool. Born in Waldassen.

Won a Champions League winners medal (amongst other medals) with Liverpool in 2005.
