Howard Kendall: "I don't really see the big fuss about Newcastle United agreeing a sponsorship deal with Wonga.

"For me Mike Ashley and people in his position have to do the best for their football club.

"In this case that means a significant investment in the club and the chance of sanity finally returning and reverting back to calling the stadium St James’ Park.

"I used to go there as a boy and watch the Magpies, and it never seemed right when they renamed it the Sports Direct Arena.

"The support Newcastle gets is phenomenal and they never stopped calling it St James’ Park anyway.

"It irks me when I got through all the top flight clubs who have lost a little bit of their identity by changing the name of their stadia.

"Highbury is no more for the Emirates, Maine Road went the same way and we have the Etihad and Roker Park in Sunderland ended up as the Stadium of Light.

"At least in Merseyside we still have Goodison Park and Anfield.

"I’ve read that Everton have been dragged into the sponsorship debate because they’re sponsored by a brewery – but I think you have to stick to your guns and do what’s right for your business.

"After all, Everton stick to the guidelines and the Chang logo doesn’t appear on their junior kits."
