The England midfielder has missed the last three games but was close to being fit for consideration for Saturday’s match against Aston Villa.
"He has had a grade one muscle tear in the hamstring and it just needs looking after,” Sir Bobby told the Evening Chronicle.
“He is close to playing again and if he does not play tomorrow then we will try and get him fit for Basel, and if not Basel then Chelsea next Sunday."
