After winning just two caps for Wales, Newcastle defender Paul Dummett has quit international football.

Image result for Newcastle Paul DummettDummett, who was a key part of the Newcastle side which won the Championship this season, made his international debut against the Netherlands two years ago. He would make just one other friendly appearance in intervening three years, also against the Netherlands.

The 25-year-old was part of the wider Wales squad called up for Euro 2016 but failed to make the final cut.

Wales manager Chris Coleman told BBC that he was disappointed with Dummett's decision.

He doesn't want to play international football which is a disappointment from our point of view. But he's made that decision, and we have to abide by that.

We'll get on with the squad of players, the squad who want to play and represent Wales. There's nothing we can do with Paul who's decided that international football is not the path he wants to go down.

Wales, who are in the same World Cup qualification group as Ireland, sit third in Group D, four points behind both Ireland and Serbia.

Coleman said he had not heard from the player himself, only his agent.

Sometimes you have to be patient especially because the team we have at the moment has been hugely successful.

It's a shame because he's a good player. I haven't spoken to Paul. His agent rang me up to give me the news.

I was disappointed, but if he doesn't want to persevere with it then that's his choice. We've got to look after the players who want to play for us.
