Daily Record Blame Souness For Missing Out On Euro 2008!

Scotland fell agonisingly at the final hurdle in their Euro 2008 qualification bid as Christian Panucci's last-gasp header earned Italy a 2-1 win at Hampden on Saturday night.

And I couldn't believe it this morning when a reporter from the Daily Record appeared on SKY TV and said the rot set in with Scottish football "when Graeme Souness joined Rangers as player-manager".

For God's sake ... that was TWENTY YEARS AGO!

That's like saying Newcastle have not been the same since Kevin Keegan retired as a player!

They have long memories those Scots. We hardly had a wonderful time under Souness' leadership, but come on you Scots ... "let it go".

Daily Record: "Souness brought some good players to Scotland, but he brought a lot of rubbish (from England). Rangers spent big money, and Celtic followed signing players from outside of Scotland".

Alex McLeish's side needed to win to ensure a path to Austria and Switzerland next summer and, despite going behind just two minutes in, they almost overcame the reigning world champions.

Barry Ferguson's 64th-minute tap-in cancelled out Luca Toni's opener and James McFadden missed two late chances to win it for the home side before Panucci struck in injury-time.
