Reports in Spain claimed the Magpies had already agreed a deal to recruit the Deportivo La Coruna defender and while that is premature, a club spokesman says talks are progressing.

Coloccini is looking to leave Depor and had threatened to invoke Article 17 in FIFA's regulations in order to walk out on the Galician club.

That comment - from the Argentina international's agent - came after Depor had rejected an initial offer, believed to be in the region of £9.5million.

However, it now appears that the versatile stopper will be on his way to St James' Park in the coming days.

Kevin Keegan: "There's one deal which is ongoing at the moment.

"Hopefully we'll have something to tell you over the weekend."
