The Frenchman, who is currently on loan from Marseille, suffered a fractured fibula and tibia which required surgery after a horror tackle by the Manchester City midfielder last weekend.

Representatives from Eastlands contacted Ben Arfa's management team to see if de Jong could visit him in hospital in Manchester before returning to the north-east.

However, his request was flatly turned down.

Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan admits the whole squad is gutted for the injured player.

Kevin Nolan: "I've not managed to speak to him yet but the lads have sent him texts - I texted him and I spoke to his agent who said he is in good spirits.

"Obviously, we are all gutted with what happened to him after the start he had made but that's football unfortunately. Hopefully he's back as quickly as possible and makes a full recovery.

"When you start losing players through injury it gets a bit tough and you tend to look at it even more when you start to lose games.

"It's going to be a difficult season, we knew that from the start, but the lads are sticking together and I'm sure we'll be okay."

Newcastle full-back Jose Enrique feels Nigel de Jong should be banned for breaking Hatem Ben Arfa's leg.

Jose Enrique: "It was a hideous tackle by De Jong. He's one of those players who goes for the kill in every challenge. I hope they ban him for the five or six months that Ben Arfa will be out injured.

"It is not the first time he has seriously injured another player.

"He did something similar last season (to Stuart Holden during an international fixture against USA) and we all know about the boot in Xabi Alonso's chest at the World Cup.

"It was a senseless kick, in the fourth minute of the game. The referee did not even blow for a foul and De Jong continued dishing out kicks to our players all afternoon.

"We are now left with just two wingers until the transfer window reopens in January. If that had been Wayne Rooney instead of Ben Arfa, they would punish De Jong and make an example of him.

"It strikes me as a very good thing that he has not been called up to play for Holland.

"As far as I know he did not even come to our dressing-room afterwards to say sorry."
