He returned to United’s North Tyneside HQ at the start of the week to join up with his team-mates for the first time this summer.

Cisse broke his knee-cap in the 2-1 loss to Swansea City back in May and he has since had surgery and rehab at Clairefontaine, in France, over the summer.

The striker’s knee injury has healed completely and while he is running again, Newcastle won’t rush him back into full contact training just yet.

Cisse's return could yet be a month or six weeks away.

He has retained the iconic number 9 shirt at St James’ Park for the season ahead.

Cisse was linked with Fenerbahce, Trabzonspor and AS Roma last season, and his future at the club is still unsure.
