Chopra on international duty
The prolific 18-year-old striker has just broken into the first team squad and will now be at St James’ until at least 2005.

Chopra has an outstanding scoring record for the Under-17s, Under-19s and Reserves, scoring 90 goals in 94 games for the club.

He has also successfully represented England at five different age groups, scoring 11 goals in 30 representative appearances, and has been widely tipped to be the first player of Asian origin to represent the full England team – although Michael is a Geordie born and bred.

Sir Bobby was delighted, commenting: "We are thrilled that Michael has agreed a new contract with us. He has been a prolific goalscorer for the junior sides in the last couple of years and has begun the new season with a bang for the Reserves, so much so that he has justifiably forced his way into the first team picture.

"Michael, together with the other young players we have at the Club, will have a major influence on our future, one that we hope will be very bright for Newcastle United."

Chopra himself told the Evening Chronicle: "I am absolutely thrilled to have signed a new contract for Newcastle United. I am very ambitious, as is the club, and we have shown over the past year that we are capable of winning honours and competing at the highest level.

"I would like to record my sincere thanks to my family and all the coaching staff at Newcastle United who have helped my career so far."

Good to see this exciting prospect committing his future to the club and I can’t wait to see him in first team action. Hopefully starting against Everton next week.
