New signing David Rozehnal, who has looked superb in pre-season and at Bolton on Saturday, cannot wait to partner the Brazilian.

Czech Republic international star Rozehnal witnessed at first hand the powerful impact of the 31-year-old centre-back, who guided Lyon to five consecutive titles.

For two of those titles came during Rozehnal's two years in France and at the expense of his old club Paris St Germain.

Rozehnal: "I don't know him too well yet as a person, but I did play against him a few times and he is a top player.

"He played for Lyon for a long time and if you do that, you must be a top quality player. He was captain and that is something special.

"I have spoken to him since he arrived and he is a clever guy and down to earth. He does not go on like a big star and he is a likeable character.

"The Premiership will be tough but I am ready for the fight. We have done a good job preparing for the competition. We work hard at Newcastle and now it is up to us.

"I have to learn a lot more, but providing we can communicate properly and strive to keep clean sheets that's the only thing that counts as a defence.

"Then it is down to goals, but I think we will be OK.

"You cannot forget that the English League is still one of the best in the world. And, of course, it is hard work. Every game there is pressure.

"But if you want to play over here you have to follow the rules and learn about your opponents - starting with Bolton.

"It is good that we are getting some more quality defenders in now. It is now up to us to help them adapt quickly into the team.

"At this time we have a lot of good players here, some good young players and generally a strong squad.

"I am not going to say anything against PSG because it is a wonderful club and I enjoyed my time there.

"But everything at Newcastle is on a much higher level than PSG. I feel good at this club and I am ready for the Premier League."
