Butt Didn't Expect To Return To Tyneside

Nicky Butt: "This was always going to be a difficult year for me coming back to Newcastle, but I am the type of person who likes to prove people wrong and I feel I have done that.

"I thought it was the end - who wouldn't? When you go out on loan, you never think you are going to come back. Anyone who says that they aren't is lying.

"I didn't think I would be coming back to the club, nor be involved too much, if at all.

"But I had a word with Glenn when Newcastle played Birmingham at the end of last season and he said, 'I look forward to you coming back'.

"After that, it was a case of getting my head down and working for my chance.

"My main priority this year was to come back and prove I was a good player and that I wanted to come back and play for a club as big as Newcastle."

Roeder: "He is very consistent. I worked with Nicky for two-and-a-half years when I worked with Glenn Hoddle and he was one of that group of Manchester United players we had in the team at that time.

"They are all out of the same mould, every single one of them, (David) Beckham, the Nevilles, (Paul) Scholes, Nicky.

"You just know they have been through the Manchester United school of learning and toughness, and that is testament to their manager, I guess.

"You can confidently go to war with Nicky Butt knowing he will give you his guts and everything, and that is why he is the holder of 12, 13 major medals.

"You might fluke one, but you do not fluke 12 or 13."
