The Toon could do no more than sit and suffer as Sunderland thumped Everton 3-0, a result which confined both Newcastle and Norwich to the Championship, despite the latter beating Watford 4-2 at Carrow Road.

Football League sponsors Sky Bet make Newcastle 9/2 favourites to win the Championship and 11/10 to be promoted, with Norwich quoted at 13/2 and 2/1 respectively.

Aston Villa, whose place in the second tier was confirmed weeks ago, are bigger still at 12/1 to win the league and 7/2 to return to the top flight.

Sky Bet's Sandro Di Michele said: "Newcastle are going to attract plenty of support this summer and we expect they will be the cornerstone of plenty of ante-post multiples.

"They have to be favourites as things stand and, with a little investment and once their managerial situation is cleared up, it's quite possible they go off much shorter than the 9/2 currently on offer."

Tuesday's win for Sunderland heaped further pressure on Everton boss Roberto Martinez, and Sky Bet now offer 14/1 that he's still in charge come the first day of next season.

"It's hard to see how Martinez survives the summer," Di Michele added.

Sky Bet have Sunderland at 3/1 to be relegated next season - they are also 8/13 to finish above local rivals Middlesbrough - with Everton at 14s.
