Ex-Newcastle United winger Laurent Robert is backing his big pal Habib Beye to do the business at St James' Park.

The Senegalese international Beye took a roasting at Eastfields last week, but Robert says he will "come good" given time.

The last time Robert and Beye came face to face was in the UEFA Cup at the end of the 2003-04 season when Marseille knocked United out at the semi-final stage with a 2-0 home win after a goalless draw at St James' Park.

Laurent Robert: "Newcastle United fans need have no fears about Habib Beye, who is a very good guy and a good pal of mine.

"He is a fine defender who is very fast and very supportive of his front men, and most difficult for a winger like me to play against.

"I often came up against him when I was with Paris St Germain and he played for Strasbourg and I always found him a difficult opponent.

"He is as fast a full-back as I have ever faced and this will stand him in good stead in the Premier League with my old club.

"Perhaps on those two nights Habib found me a difficult opponent."
