Best And Perch - Hughton Signings He Would Rather Forget?

Andy Carroll, Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger are all ahead of him and Chris Hughton had hoped to loan him out to get him match fit.

But that doesn't seem as though it will happen, and it does question Best's attitude as he intends to stay at the club and sit out his three and a half year contract.

He is on good money at the club and he knows full well he would take a pay cut if he went anywhere else.

His injury record doesn't help matters either, as he admits he gets injured at the drop of a hat.

Like James Perch, he is a Hughton signing that hasn't paid off.

There is still time for both of them to make an impact, but the signs are certainly not good.

Leon Best: “I definitely want to stay here.

“I’ve been sent out on loan since I was 17 years old and I’m really not interested in going out on loan.

“I want to stay at Newcastle because I love it here and I want to help them do well.

"Whether that is from the bench or starting games, whatever, I don’t mind.

“I want to play, of course I do, but I love it here and I want to fight for my place. I’ve got to wait for my chance and, when it comes, make the most of it.

“I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League.

“It’s what I’ve been working towards my whole career, but then bang, I get injured.

"It’s like somebody up there is testing me. I keep getting injuries at key times, it’s happened my whole career.

“When I came back in preseason it was the best I’ve felt in a long time. I was looking after myself, I’d scored a couple of goals home and away, and that was massive for me.

“I didn’t score last season and that was on my back a little bit, but I was confident after getting goals in pre-season – that’s crucial for a striker.

“But then I get an injury and it’s three months on the sidelines with niggles here and there.”

Directions & Car Parking

From The South:
M6 to Junction 21a, take eastbound M62 leaving at Junction 12. Follow signs for M61 (Bolton/Preston) and leave the M61 motorway at Junction 6. The ground is visible from this junction and is clearly sign posted.

From The North:
M6 to Junction 29 and take the M65 towards Blackburn. Leave the M65 at junction two and join the M61 towards Manchester. Leave the M61 at junction six. The ground is visible from this junction and is clearly sign posted.

John Walsh adds; 'Because of traffic congestion on the M60 (formerly M62),  caused by the Trafford Centre, I would recommend that those supporters travelling from the South should take the North directions above. It is about 10 miles further but can save 30 minutes and a lot of frustration!'

There is a car park at the ground, but wait for this, it costs 6! Plus on my last visit the cars in the away section of the car park were packed in like sardines, meaning that away fans leaving early (my team had just been stuffed!) couldn't get a quick getaway as there were cars blocking them in. However a lot of the surrounding industrial estate units offer cheaper parking, usually around the 3 mark. Some of these are located on either side of Lostock Lane. From the M61, go past the stadium on your left, move into the right hand filter lane and turn right at the traffic lights into Lostock Lane. If you continue down Lostock Lane and take a left hand turn before to the Bromilow Arms, then I noticed on my last visit that there was some street parking to be had at the bottom of this road. Neil Casson a visiting Tottenham Hotspur fan informs me; 'I've been to Bolton a couple times and parked at a factory unit on Cranfield Road, which is the first right off Lostock Lane. Its the first unit on the right as you enter Cranfield Road costs 3.50 and it's staffed for the duration of the game. Away fans are located in the South Stand, so it's just a short walk back to your car. The official car parks seem to be well snarled up and parking I recommend parking just away from the ground if you want a quick getaway'.

Gary Lovatt adds 'On the parking front, a handy little idea is to park at the Beehive pub which is on the roundabout (half a mile past the stadium coming from the motorway) where you pay 5 per car but get it all back at the bar. I also recommend the cajun chicken baguette there!' To get to the Beehive leave the M61 at Junction 6 and drive down towards the stadium. Then continue straight on past the stadium and the Beehive pub is situated at the next roundabout, on Chorley New Road.

By Train

Horwich Parkway railway station serves the stadium, with regular trains from Bolton's main station. Horwich Parkway is only a few minutes walk from the stadium.

Where To Drink

Steve Openshaw recommends the Bromilow Arms; "from the M61, go past the stadium on your left, move into the right hand filter lane and turn right at the traffic lights into Lostock Lane, and about half a mile down on the left is the Bromilow Arms. Good ale, friendly atmosphere, free car parking. Ten minutes walk away from ground". I have personally visited this pub on a number of occasions now. Each time I have been  impressed with the warm welcome and the good mix of home and away fans. The small pub has a country feel, serves good real ale from the local Bank Top Brewery and food from a lunchtime snack menu. All in all it was a gem! Plus if you ask nicely they will also allow you to leave your car in their car park, while you go off to watch the match.

There is also the Beehive Pub near to the ground where you can also park your car. Otherwise alcohol is served within the ground, although for some games such as local derbies, the Club opt not to sell any. Or on my last visit alcohol was available to away supporters before the game but not at half time, much to the annoyance of the travelling fans.

There are a number of bars on the nearby Middlebrook Retail Park (Reebok Stadium is on the Middlebrook Retail estate). However most of these have bouncers on the doors that only admit home fans on production of a matchday or season ticket, There are though plenty of eating outlets on the Retail Park; KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut and a Bolton Wanderers themed McDonalds as well as several other themed restaurants. Whilst inside the stadium there is the usual array of pies, rollover hot dogs & burgers on sale.

Away Fans

Away fans are housed in the two tiered South Stand at one end of the ground, where up to 5,000 supporters can be accommodated, although the normal allocation is nearer 3,000. The lower tier is shared with home supporters, but the upper tier is given entirely to away fans. The leg room and facilities within this stand are good and the atmosphere is boosted in the home end by the presence of a drummer. Alex Smith adds; 'away fans should note that the bottom rows of the lower tier are not covered by the roof and therefore you may get wet if it rains'. Whilst Paul Kelly warns; 'the stewards at the Reebok can be a bit over zealous, often throwing out fans for little reason. My advice to away fans is do not even think about celebrating a goal by going further forward than the front row. They'll have you even if you're just on the bit of track behind the adverts. Also you may be told to sit down during the game, take heed and do so. Fans have been removed who persistently stand up during the game'.

It was another frustrating afternoon for Chris Hughton's men as they produced another bout of stage-fright in front of their own public.

But it could have been even worse for the Magpies, who saw Moussa Dembele's 70th-minute volley come back off the crossbar after Tim Krul had kept out three efforts from Clint Dempsey and another from Zoltan Gera.

Last season St James' Park was a fortress when we went through the entire campaign without a single defeat on home turf.

This time around, we don't know what Newcastle side is going to turn up!

How do you explain going from the 6-0 over Aston Villa and 5-1 against the Mackems,  to defeats at the hands of also-rans Blackpool, Stoke and Blackburn?

Fulham had not won an away game in 28 attempts ... but (like Blackburn) they do have an impressive record at SJP for some reason. Is it Newcastle complacency or do the minows raise their game?

Andy Carroll gave Brede Hangeland a tough afternoon, and it was only an amazing save from Schwarzer that stopped the new England international (come Wednesday) from grabbing the points.

After a slow start the visitors worked their way into the game as their passing and movement stretched their hosts and it was they who mustered the first serious attempts on goal in a flurry of activity.

First Krul had to come from his line to block Dempsey's close-range effort after Hangeland had flicked on a 28th-minute Simon Davies corner, and he then had to dive full length to turn away Gera's left-foot drive from 20 yards.

He was at full stretch once again on the half-hour to turn away Dempsey's curling shot with Fulham starting to dominate.

However, Newcastle finished the half strongly and might have taken the lead themselves eight minutes before the break.

Danny Guthrie, deputising for the suspended Joey Barton, delivered a corner perfectly into Carroll's run and the striker's volley was unwittingly blocked by team-mate Kevin Nolan on the line.

The rebound dropped to Lovenkrands and he smashed it towards goal only for Schwarzer to save instinctively.

But as the half-time whistle sounded, the anxiety in the stands had decreased little.

The home side needed only two minutes of the second half to call Schwarzer into action once again when Guthrie slid the ball into Lovenkrands' path and his shot was parried by the Australian with Hangeland clearing the loose ball.

Schwarzer was extended even further five minutes later when Carroll ran on to a clearance 22 yards out and blasted in a stinging volley which was heading into the bottom corner before the goalkeeper got down to turn it away.

But Krul had to match his opposite number's feat four minutes later when Dempsey ran on to Dembele's lay-off and fired firmly towards the bottom corner.

However, Newcastle went close once again with 66 minutes gone when Jonas Gutierrez and Guthrie broke at pace for the latter to cross for Lovenkrands, whose firm header was saved by Schwarzer.

Mike Williamson had to make a timely intervention to deny Cottagers striker Andrew Johnson, making his first league start since January, with 69 minutes gone, and from the resulting corner substitute Dickson Etuhu's header was blocked and Dembele rattled the crossbar with a volley.

Hughton threw on the youthful legs of Nile Ranger and Wayne Routledge with time fast running out, but it was Carroll who went closest as time ran down with Hangeland making a priceless block to keep out his 85th-minute strike.
