The striker went on loan to Celtic, saying Souness would not last the pace at Newcastle and when the Jock had left, he would return. But it didn't quite work that way. Souness sold him to Blackburn ... THEN he was sacked!

Bellamy made his first apearance back on Tyneside on Saturday since his transfer, but in Liverpool colours, and Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez admitted his side should have made more of their first-half dominance. Bellamy scored on six minutes but was denied by Titus Bramble, Steve Harper and the crossbar in a blistering start.

Benitez: "After the first half, the score could have been 0-3 or 0-4. But we conceded a stupid goal and then a stupid penalty, and after that, it is difficult to win.

"We created enough chances, very clear chances, to win the game. When you play away from home and you have three or four chances like that, you must finish the game.

"We will go now to our training camp for some days and we can start thinking about the Champions League and the game against Barcelona."
