Sam claimed he was "interested" in him, but not quite yet. The Newcastle back-line needs experience, and if any youngster was going to stake a place ... it was Taylor, not Davies.

Davies is desperate to quit West Bromwich Albion and seal a move back to the Premier League, and his sights have now moved away from Tyneside to North London.

The former Baggies skipper has had transfer requests rejected by West Brom, who are insistent they will not let him leave unless their valuation - believed to be over £7million - is met.

After spending a year in the Championship trying to help them back up, Davies does not see his future with West Brom - after they lost in the play-off final.

Tottenham are leading the hunt for his signature and Davies admits he would love to move to White Hart Lane.

Davies: "Spurs are a good club and with the signings they have made they could break into the top four.

"They are renowned for signing young British talent and I have some friends there like Tom Huddlestone and Aaron Lennon.
"I can't afford to fall any further behind the other young English defenders like Steven Taylor, Anton Ferdinand, Michael Dawson and Nedum Onuoha by playing in the Championship for another season."
