On Thursday, eyebrows were raised in footballing circles up and down the country when Newcastle boss Alan Pardew agreed an unprecedented EIGHT-year contract extension with the Toon.

One of the more bizarre outcomes of Pardew’s new deal will see the Daily Telegraph’s chief football correspondent Henry Winter swim Newcastle’s river Tyne.

Winter publicly doubted that Toon chairman Mike Ashely would show loyalty to Pardew – not an unfair assumption given that Ashley sacked Pardew’s predecessor Chris Hughton with the team performing admirably at the time – and joked that he would swim the Tyne if Ashley stuck with his gambling buddy.

The flippant remark has spectacularly backfired on Winter, who took to twitter to confirm that he will honour his word.
