Newcastle United are on the verge of making a huge splash in the transfer market by securing the services of the duo of Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle, and the double swoop is expected to cost the Magpies a fee in excess of £20 million.

In addition to the two huge signings, manager Rafael Benitez is working towards acquiring other targets as well and it was reported by the Nottingham Post recently that the Magpies are currently in talks over the signing of ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Berbatov was released by Greek side PAOK at the end of last season and is currently available on a free transfer. The former Bulgarian international is already 35 but his advancing years have reportedly not put off Benitez and claims are being made that Newcastle are ready to take their chances on the striker.

Berbatov is also believed to be open to a move to St. James’ Park as he was a huge fan of Geordie hero Alan Shearer as a child and the former Manchester United star would surely love to play for his idol’s beloved club.

Having been linked to such a huge name, there has understandably been a lot of discussions already among the Newcastle fans regarding the potential transfer on social media website Twitter and many seem to have welcomed the possibility of the Magpies signing Berbatov.
