Aarons is in contention to return to the squad for the Wear-Tyne derby, but as yet United are no closer to settling a long-term contract with Aarons, who has more than a year left on his deal.

Aarons has plenty of suitors but Newcastle’s confidence in keeping him is based on the fact he is likely to get more first-team chances at St James’ Park than he would elsewhere.

They believe a contract based on games played and achievements would prove a bigger motivation as they look to renegotiate a contract that was signed in the last year.
