86 Year Old Record Keeps Given At St James' Park!

Between 1904/22 Lawrence made 496 appearances, more than any Newcastle player in history, and Given has snubbed interest from clubs such as Arsenal as he makes it a quest to reach 500!

Given was once said to be "too small" to be a world class goalkeeper, but Lawrence - at 5ft 10" - wasn't particularly tall himself.

Born in Glasgow, Lawrence signed for Newcastle aged 19 and made his debut in October 1904. He was capped once for Scotland, won Championship medals in 1905, 1907 and 1909 and on the FA Cup in 1910 (and played in another 4 finals).

He made his last appearance in April 1922 at home to Bradford City aged 42.
Given is back in the team but Kevin Keegan admitted that this was the hardest decision he had to make when he sat down and picked his starting XI for Manchester United.

Keegan: "That was my toughest decision last Sunday.

"Steve Harper, in a normal world, deserved to stay No 1, because he had it for the last 11 games of last season.

"He did terrifically well, but I had to make that decision.

"All the others were easy, not dead easy, but the team we picked was the right team, and thank goodness the lads showed it was."
