5-1 A Fair Reflection? Were Fans Happy With The 'Effort'?

Chris Hughton: “I think apart from the goals the reaction of the players was fine.

“It’s not like we sat back and were prepared to soak up pressure.

“We tried to pass the ball and we tried to get in the right areas.

“We tried to create and amongst all of that I think that’s what the fans want to see.

“They want to see a team trying to win the game as opposed to sitting back. But you have to make sure you don’t concede goals like we did.

“Our thoughts are always with the supporters – always.

“For us, it was a bad day.

“It was a bad afternoon but the supporters got behind us and will undoubtedly continue to get behind us.

“We need to put this bad defeat to the back of our minds and concentrate on the game with Chelsea next week.

“We started the game OK against a Bolton team in really good form at the moment.

“But we can’t give goals away like we did in that first half.

“If you do, you make life difficult for yourself.

“To go in 2-0 down was a big blow.

“We knew we could get back into the game, but you need to show enough character to do it.

“The third goal really killed us.

“At 3-1 we showed spirit and we had other chances.

“I don’t think 5-1 was a fair reflection of the game, but we have been in that position ourselves this season.

“It was a good day in front of goal for them and a poor day for us.

“It’s not acceptable and there are plenty of things we can work on.

“You look at what you can work on.

“What you can’t afford to do in this division is to give the type of goals away that we did and expect to win football matches, or expect to be in their pushing.

“We did say there would be bad days this season.

“Bolton was a bad day, but we didn’t do ourselves any favours.

“We conceded two penalties and another poor goal in the first half.

“And aside of that, we have to make sure we defend better than we did and we didn’t on Saturday.

“The team will not need motivation for the next game.

“It’s a really bad day for us but we’re understanding about our supporters who went to Bolton.

“It will take a day or two to get over.

“But our thoughts are on Chelsea now.”
